Lake Michigan

Beach Towns

You can't go wrong with any of the beach towns along the Lake Michigan coast.  But here are my top five, in no particular order....

  • Holland -- A lot of history, great beach, great tourist activities such as Windmill Island and Dutch Village.  And one of the biggest tourist icons is Big Red, the lighthouse that graces the pier leading from Lake Michigan into Lake Macatawa.

  • Petoskey -- Fabulous little town with great restaurants and pubs.  This is also where you'll want to find a beach and search for the elusive Petoskey Stone.

  • Harbor Springs -- Located on the north shore of Little Traverse Bay, Harbor Springs is a great place to get away for a weekend or vacation for the summer.  I love the downtown shopping area and there is one of the largest marinas on Michigan's west coast if you're looking to travel by boat -- Walstrom Marine.

  • Leland -- Located on the famed M22, Leland is a quaint fishing town with shopping and restaurants to match.

  • Grand Haven -- Known for its sandy beaches and boardwalk, Grand Haven is a great place for shopping and dining.  Two favorites of locals and tourists are the Musical Fountain that features synchronized light and water shows every summer night at dusk, the annual Coast Guard Festival and Pronto Pups!  If you've never had a Pronto Pup you must stop at least once at this corndog stand.  It's cash only and the line is usually long ... but worth the wait.  Idea:  Bring a blanket and a cooler, grab some Pronto Pups, and sit on the grassy bank and watch the musical fountain.
